How the kitten feeding calculator works
It uses the vet energy formula β RER = 70 Γ (kg)0.75 β multiplied by a higher growth factor, because kittens burn far more energy than adults. The youngest kittens need about 3Γ their resting requirement, dropping toward 1.6Γ near adulthood. Dividing by the calories in your food gives the number of servings.
Meals per day by age
| Age | Meals/day |
|---|---|
| Under 4 months | 4 small meals (or free-fed kitten food) |
| 4β6 months | 3 meals |
| 6β12 months | 2β3 meals |
| Adult | 2 meals |
Tips
- Always use a kitten/growth formula β adult food doesn't meet a kitten's needs.
- Provide fresh water at all times, especially with dry food.
- Re-weigh and re-check the amount every couple of weeks.
- Keep treats under 10% of daily calories.
Frequently asked questions
Can I free-feed my kitten?
Many kittens do fine with free access to kitten food while growing, since they burn lots of energy. Switch to measured meals if your kitten gains too much weight or as it nears adulthood.
Wet or dry food for kittens?
Both work; a mix is popular. Wet food adds hydration, dry is convenient. Choose a complete kitten formula either way.
