Cats are obligate carnivores

Unlike dogs, cats must get most of their nutrition from animal protein. Human foods should only ever be occasional treats making up a small fraction of their diet โ€” a complete, balanced cat food should always be the foundation. Many "safe" plant foods offer little benefit to a cat and are best given sparingly, if at all.

The most dangerous foods for cats

Cats are especially sensitive to onion and garlic. Also never give chocolate, grapes or raisins, alcohol, caffeine, or anything containing xylitol.

โš ๏ธ This guide covers general cases for healthy adult cats. Quantity and individual sensitivity matter. Kittens, seniors, and cats with health conditions may react differently. When in doubt, or if your cat ate something toxic, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 / Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

Frequently asked questions

Can cats eat tuna?

Only occasionally. Canned tuna in water (not oil or brine) as a rare treat is okay, but it's not nutritionally complete and too much can cause mercury exposure and a fish addiction that leads to a poor diet.

Can cats eat dog food?

A bite won't hurt, but dog food lacks taurine and other nutrients cats need, so it must never replace cat food.

Can cats drink milk?

Most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Despite the stereotype, milk often causes diarrhea and upset stomach โ€” water is best.
