A bite won't hurt — but it's not a meal
If your cat sneaks a mouthful of the dog's dinner, don't panic — it's not toxic. The problem is long-term: cats are obligate carnivores with needs dog food simply isn't built to meet.
What dog food is missing for cats
- Taurine — cats can't make enough themselves; too little causes heart disease and blindness. Dog food has little to none added.
- Vitamin A — cats need it pre-formed from animal sources; dogs can convert it from plants, so dog food relies on that.
- Arachidonic acid — an animal-based fatty acid cats require.
- More protein — cats need a higher proportion of animal protein than dogs.
Over weeks and months, a dog-food diet leads to serious deficiencies. Always feed your cat a complete, balanced cat food.
Stop the bowl-raiding
- Feed the cat and dog in separate rooms or at different times.
- Use a raised feeding spot the cat can reach but the dog can't (or vice versa).
- Switch from free-feeding to scheduled meals and pick up bowls after.
