Why chocolate is toxic to cats
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, stimulants that cats (like dogs) cannot process safely. Cats lack the taste receptors for sweetness, so they rarely eat chocolate on purpose โ but it's often hidden in things they might lick (ice cream, baked goods, milky drinks). Dark and baking chocolate are the most dangerous; even small amounts matter because cats are small.
What to do if your cat ate chocolate
Don't wait for symptoms. Call your vet or a pet poison line: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 (US). Tell them your cat's weight, the chocolate type, and amount. Our chocolate toxicity calculator can help gauge risk while you call.
Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in cats
Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness or hyperactivity, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, muscle tremors, and in severe cases seizures. Signs can take several hours to appear and may last a couple of days.
Frequently asked questions
My cat licked a little chocolate ice cream โ is that dangerous?
A tiny lick of milk chocolate is less likely to cause serious harm than dark chocolate, but call your vet or poison control to be safe, especially for a small or older cat.
Is white chocolate safe for cats?
It has almost no theobromine, but it's very high in fat and sugar, which can cause stomach upset. Best avoided.
