Plain bread: safe but pointless

A small piece of plain, fully baked bread won't harm most cats, and some cats are oddly drawn to it. But bread is a carbohydrate cats don't need — it has no nutritional value for an obligate carnivore and is just empty calories. Keep it to a rare, tiny treat, if at all.

⚠️ Never raw bread dough

Raw, rising yeast dough is genuinely dangerous: in the warm stomach it keeps expanding, and the fermenting yeast produces alcohol, which can cause painful bloating and alcohol poisoning. Keep dough well out of reach while it proofs, and call your vet immediately if your cat eats some.

⚠️ Bread offers nothing a cat needs and adds calories. Diabetic or overweight cats should skip it entirely. When in doubt, choose a protein treat like plain chicken.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my cat obsessed with bread?

No one's sure — it may be the yeasty smell or texture. The attraction doesn't mean it's good for them, so don't encourage it.

Can cats eat toast?

A plain, small piece of cooled toast (no butter, spreads, or toppings) is okay rarely — same rules as bread.
