Why dogs do it
- Instinct. Mother dogs eat their puppies' stool to keep the den clean; puppies copy, and some never grow out of it.
- Boredom & stress. Under-exercised, anxious, or confined dogs may eat stool for stimulation or self-soothing.
- Hunger. Dogs that are under-fed, on a low-calorie diet, or very food-motivated may treat stool as food.
- It got a reaction. If you ran over and made a fuss every time, some dogs repeat it for attention — or gulp it to "hide the evidence" after being scolded during house-training.
- Taste & scavenging. Dogs are scavengers; cat litter boxes and other animals' droppings can be weirdly appealing to them.
- Medical. Intestinal parasites, poor nutrient absorption (e.g. EPI), or conditions that ramp up appetite (diabetes, Cushing's, thyroid issues) can drive it. A new habit in an adult dog earns a vet visit.
How to stop it
- Remove the temptation. Pick up stool the moment it lands — at home and on walks. No access, no habit.
- Teach "leave it." Keep walks on leash, reward turning away from poop with a high-value treat, and walk on.
- Rule out the basics. Ask your vet to check for parasites and confirm the diet is complete and filling enough.
- Beat boredom. More walks, sniff games, puzzle feeders, and training time give the brain a better job.
- Don't punish. Scolding can backfire and make the behavior worse; reward the choice you want instead.
- Block the litter box. If it's the cat's, use a covered box or a baby gate the cat can clear but the dog can't.
Frequently asked questions
Does my dog eat poop because of a vitamin deficiency?
It's a popular theory, but evidence is thin — most poop-eating dogs are on complete diets and are perfectly healthy. Boredom, habit, and access matter far more. Still, a vet can confirm the diet and rule out malabsorption.
Do store-bought "stop eating poop" supplements work?
Results are mixed at best. Products that make stool taste bad only work if every stool is treated, and many dogs eat it anyway. Management — picking it up and training "leave it" — is far more reliable.
Will my puppy grow out of it?
Many do by about a year old, especially with consistent clean-up and training. If it's still going strong in an adult dog, treat it as a habit to manage and check in with your vet.
