Core vs non-core vaccines

Core vaccines are recommended for all puppies because the diseases are widespread, severe, or pose a risk to people:

Non-core (lifestyle) vaccines depend on where you live and what your dog does โ€” leptospirosis, Bordetella (kennel cough), canine influenza, and Lyme disease. Your vet will advise based on your region and your puppy's exposure (boarding, daycare, hiking, etc.).

Why the series matters

Puppies receive temporary immunity from their mother's milk, which gradually fades and can interfere with vaccines. That's why puppies need a series of boosters every 3โ€“4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age โ€” to ensure protection takes hold as maternal antibodies wane. Skipping doses leaves a dangerous window, especially for parvovirus.

When can my puppy meet other dogs?

Until the series is complete (around 16 weeks, plus a week or two for immunity to build), avoid dog parks, pet stores, and other high-traffic areas. You can still socialize safely with vaccinated adult dogs in controlled settings and in your own home โ€” early socialization is important, so balance safety with experience.

โš ๏ธ This is a general guide. Exact timing and which non-core vaccines are recommended vary by region, brand, and your puppy's health. Always follow the schedule your veterinarian sets for your specific puppy.

Frequently asked questions

How much do puppy vaccinations cost?

It varies widely by location and clinic, but the full puppy series typically runs from around $75 to $250+ total, with rabies often separate. Low-cost clinics and shelters may offer cheaper options.

Are there side effects?

Mild soreness, tiredness, or a low fever for a day are common and normal. Call your vet if you see facial swelling, vomiting, hives, or difficulty breathing, which can signal a rare allergic reaction.

What if I adopted an older puppy with no records?

Your vet can start or restart the core series safely. When history is unknown, it's treated as unvaccinated to be safe.
