How much water does a dog need?

A healthy dog needs roughly 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day (about 50–60 ml per kg). This includes moisture from food, so dogs on wet diets may drink less from the bowl. Activity, heat, and lactation all raise the requirement.

Signs of dehydration

⚠️ Sudden changes in drinking — either far more or far less than usual — can signal a health problem such as kidney disease or diabetes. Contact your veterinarian if you notice a persistent change.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my dog suddenly drinking a lot of water?

Increased thirst can be normal after exercise or in hot weather, but a sustained increase may indicate diabetes, kidney disease, or a hormonal condition. See your vet if it continues.

Should I limit my dog's water at night?

For house-training puppies, it can help to pick up the bowl a couple of hours before bed. Healthy adult dogs should generally have access to fresh water at all times.
