Why ham isn't a good treat
Ham isn't toxic, but it's one of the worse "people foods" to share. It's very high in salt (excessive thirst, and sodium issues in large amounts) and very high in fat, which can trigger painful, sometimes serious pancreatitis — especially in small or prone dogs. Processed ham also carries preservatives like nitrates.
If you do share
- A tiny piece of plain, lean ham, very rarely, won't harm a healthy dog.
- Avoid honey-glazed, smoked, or seasoned ham entirely.
- Never give ham bones — they splinter and can choke or injure.
⚠️ Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or signs of pancreatitis (painful belly, repeated vomiting, lethargy) and call your vet. Better treats: carrots, cooked egg.
Frequently asked questions
Can dogs eat ham at Christmas/Thanksgiving?
It's safest to skip it. Holiday ham is especially salty/glazed, and rich table scraps are a top cause of holiday pancreatitis vet visits.
Is turkey or chicken better than ham?
Yes — plain, cooked, unseasoned, skinless chicken or turkey is a much healthier meat treat for dogs.
