The two dangers of cherries
- Cyanide: the pit, stem, and leaves contain cyanogenic compounds. Chewed or in quantity, they can cause cyanide poisoning โ an emergency.
- Blockage & choking: the hard pit can lodge in the throat or intestines, especially in small dogs, sometimes requiring surgery.
The fleshy part of a cherry isn't toxic, but because the pits are easy to swallow and the risk is high, it's safest to skip cherries entirely and choose a dog-safe fruit instead.
Safer fruit alternatives
Give these instead: blueberries, strawberries, watermelon (seedless), or apple slices (no seeds).
Frequently asked questions
My dog ate one pitted cherry โ is that okay?
A single piece of pitted flesh is unlikely to harm a healthy dog, but don't make it a habit. Watch for stomach upset and call your vet if you're unsure.
Are maraschino cherries safe?
No โ they're loaded with sugar (and the pit risk may remain). Avoid them.
